Pregnant Filipina Rape Victim in Saudi Arabia gets assistance from Philippine Embassy, Suspects arrested

Featured

The pregnant Filipina who was allegedly raped by three Saudi men in Dammam is being assisted by the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh.

The Embassy attended to the Filipina as soon as it became aware of the case and has provided legal counsel by the Embassy.

Representatives from the Embassy immediately went to the Genobiya Police to assist the Filipina, check on her condition and coordinate with the local police in their investigation.

The Filipina, who hails from Bulacan, was walking on her way back to her accommodations from a check-up at the General Case Hospital in Dammam last July 7 when a vehicle stopped and the driver called her attention asking if she works for a certain company.

After being raped, the suspects dropped her off in a nearby the Carrefour Mall where she was able to get the help of Filipinos who were there.

“The Department is pleased to know that the three suspects were already arrested and remains to be in police custody,” DFA Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Esteban B. Conejos said.

The Filipina, who delivered her baby on Wednesday, decided to pursue the case. As soon as she recuperates, she will identify the suspects, who were all arrested, in a police line-up so prosecution of the case will can commence.

“The Department, through our Embassy in Riyadh, is providing all appropriate legal and consular assistance to the Filipina as she has decided to pursue the case. A lawyer has been hired to assist her and the Department will not stop in assisting her until justice is served,” said Conejos.

DOH reveals rise in leptospirosis cases due to floods

Featured

Health Secretary Enrique Ona today reiterated his advice to the public not to wade in floodwaters and to wear rubber boots when walking in flooded streets to avoid leptospirosis, as the latest number of cases reported nationwide increased.

From January of this year up to June 25, there were 521 cases reported. This figure is 65.4 percent higher compared to the same period last year (315 cases). There were 38 deaths recorded.

Most of the cases came from Western Visayas (131 cases), the Bicol Region (64), and the Davao Region (56). Ages of cases ranged from less than one month to 72 years old. Majority (86.8%) of the cases were men. Most (20.7%) of the cases belonged to the more than 40 years age group.

“Leptospirosis is an infection commonly transmitted to humans from water that has been contaminated by animal urine (usually rats), and comes in contact with lesion in the skin, eyes, or with the mucous membranes,” the health chief explained. He added that the best defense against leptospirosis is to avoid wading in floodwater and to wear protective footwear, if wading cannot be avoided.

Health authorities said that one possible reason why Western Visayas recorded the most number of cases was that the region was endemic for leptospirosis. Hence, medical professionals and health workers have a high level of awareness of the disease’s signs and symptoms resulting in a high number of case detection. Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall and flooding in the Bicol and Davao regions this year may have contributed to the high number of leptospirosis cases in these regions.

Leptosporosis’ signs and symptoms include fever, chills, intense headache. In extreme cases, complications like meningitis, renal failure, respiratory distress, may arise and lead to death.

“The rainy season is just beginning, so we are reiterating our advise to the people to prevent leptospirosis by avoiding, as much as possible, wading in floodwaters, and to wear boots if it cannot be avoided,” Ona concluded.

Hello Again Kabayan!

Featured

Welcome to the new Kabayan Exchange!

I decided to re-build Kabayan Exchange as a normal, single-site WordPress installation and delete the old and bloated BuddyPress + WPMU site.

Originally started as a classifieds site for Filipino OFWs in Dubai looking for vacant flats to rent out rooms in their flats, Kabayan Exchange evolved into this mini social network between friends.

Unfortunately, since we were all busy with our individual plans, the site fell into a state of neglect, a bloated mess of WPMU splogs and plugins.

Starting afresh will help give me a better direction to take for this site.

The Importance of Connection

I had dinner with two friends who were in the testing phase of what could be. They came from different parts of the world but were both exposed to the complexities of culture. They were broadminded and were careful not to rush into something they might regret in the future. Along the course of our meal we came to a point of how to find out if you were meant to be. I pondered and blurted out two significant and vital parts of the “knowing” process. I said you have to primarily connect on two levels of communication, the verbal and the non-verbal. And, as Mr. Covey states, “Begin with the end in mind”. Continue reading

This latest version of WordPress is just plain awesome.

I’m now editing this article using the fullscreen editor which I find as a very appealing feature for people who just love to write and prefers to not get distracted by any interface.

Perfection seems attainable and WordPress is getting there.
